Our Principles

Our Principles

Our role at Farmers & Artisans is to forge a connection between theĀ farmer and the eater to their mutual benefit.

As a member of the local food community we should all strive to the following: eat wisely, support the producer, and become an advocate.

Eat Wisely:

The best way to build a strong local food community is to eat.

It is a simple fact of nature that we all must eat to survive. But the choices of what we eat has a far reaching impact because itĀ ties food to people and place.

Eat seasonally, sustainably and with pleasure.

Food should taste good, eat foods when they are in season at their peak of flavor. Sustainably grown food is…. sustainable. Enjoy good food with family and friends whenever you can.

Eat nutritionally dense, unadulterated food.

It is impossible to process food, add back chemical nutrients lost as part of that processing and expect the resulting food to be as nutritious as the whole food you started with.

Support the Producer:

Support Small Local Farms

Support those farmers who eschew the industrial model of food production and are passionate about what they grow and their stewardship of the land.

Support diversity in local and regional quality food.

It is amazing how much food can be grown in our area given the perceived short growing season. If you ask for it they will grow it.

Respect the food and those who produce it.

No one is getting rich as part of the emerging local food community. The simple fact of the matter is that it costs more to produce good food.

Become an Advocate:

Help build a strong local food community through action, education, and collaboration.

Lend your voice to support those ideas which will promote good, clean, and fair foods.

Our Pledge:

We try to lead by example, educating ourselves and others about local food communities.
We support sustainable agriculture.
We prefer to source from local and regional, earth-friendly producers.
We recycle.
We are committed to diversity and equality. We oppose discrimination in any form.
We seek to avoid products that depend on the exploitation of others.
We strive to create good jobs.
